Dragon Meds The Dragon Tests - Pal

Hey bOb, thanks for stopping by - a lot has been said so I'll do my best to answer.
When growing in DWC buckets (the regular 20l size) I would too fill my water level until it was touching the net pot, or maybe half an inch below (powerful pumps provide enough bubbles to cover the gap as you said earlier), so I'm not aggressively disagreeing with you. However I have had issues in the past with turbulence in the water causing new roots to snap off, I'm hoping by leaving a 2" gap and forcing them to grow outwards and downwards to find the water will strengthen them somewhat and be immune to the turbulence at their young age.
As I'm sure you noticed this is a DIY res so I have no idea if this system will actually get up and running, it's just a test. I can see myself making lots of changes/adjustments as time goes on, maybe one being the gap between the netpot and water level.
The slight yellowing of this girl I think is down to her just being a greedy b**ch! MoonStone is new to us all but we quickly discovered her insatiable hunger. She had plain water for the first few days then yesterday and today I gave her 5ml of the res water via syringe to ensure there is moisture in the root riot cube (cant see it now because I filled with pebbles), so I could have started her off with more food to avoid this - doubtful that it has anything to do with the air gap between net pot and water level but I appreciate your input all the same. I think generally both methods will end up with roots in the water, just gonna be one of those things that gets chocked up to preference.
When I do another grow in a bucket I will fill it as you do to compare the results brother, this is only my third DWC grow and I'm still learning as I go.

ive many times just dropped a seed in the pebbles and let it germ and grow right there , no cube or pre germing , those times the seed was completely submerged in water

did a check on one about a year ago cause it hadnt popped its head up as quickly as expected , it already had an 8 inch long root with lotsa lil feeders coming off it , still had its helmet on too , that was less then a week from dropping in the un-germinated seed

luckily i didnt damage it and just re covered it , and it grew fine , from now on though i wont go looking for them , seeing that long root is/was enough for me to feel safe if i ever plant that way again (prolly will at some point)

peace

That's cool man, I'm still a noob so I follow the basic guidelines I picked up from members of this forum. There's endless variations on growing methods so it doesn't surprise me to learn or other ways to start off seeds in DWC. Were these all photo's you did these tests with over the years or autos? I'd be more inclined to try just dropping the seed into pebbles it it were a photo, that way and damage that might occur or grower error on my part can be rectified..I've found that auto's are like ticking time bombs they just need to go as smooth as possible right til the end.
Like I say I will test out your high water level method in the future and let you know how it goes but for now I have to work with what I got..and that's a big ass gap between net pot and water xD wish me luck bro...

yeah photos are all i experiment with , autos are too risky and like to tell you and show you that you f'd up lol

i have dropped auto seeds into the pebbles in a bucket though, i recently plopped 3 in one for a buddy who is afraid to germinate as he has always grown from clone and the 3 were small autos so i figured what the hell they will fit (remember though , my net pot is the full size round as the pot) all 3 sprouted and grew until he got slime , turns out he didnt clean his bucket between rez changes

Dunno whats up with the UK weather but it's been really warm past couple days. Water temp had hit 25 degrees when I checked this morning which is toooooo high, even saw a couple bits of slime on the side of the res for the first time - sorted all that out now and got some ice packs running to lower the temp. Tap root just starting to poke out of the net pot since last night too so should all be kicking off soon! I'm very anxious about this set up but hey if it doesn't work it doesn't work, I've never killed a plant but I may have to accept that's going to happen at some point in my growing life time

I'll get a couple pics up soon :Sharing One:

Pics as promised, the flash brings out the yellow quite a lot, she looks a lot happier to the naked eye but she may be ready for 1.0EC quite soon..In the future I'll do a test where I start her off on 1.0 to see how she goes.

Glad to have you along for the second dragon run bro, hopefully she will be okay in the big res, if not I can simply switch back to a bucket - nothing to lose by experimenting but much to learn I hope..

Baby girl still chugging along, we have roots poking out in a few places but not quite long enough to reach the water yet. Been using a syringe to top feed a little each day to ensure she doesn't dry out just using water from the res (0.8EC, 5.6-5.7PH - 1.2EC total). She seems okay for now, little hungry as always with MoonStone

Lets see her on 18/6 - she needs some rest to fill that bucket
