New Grower Train wreck autoflowering!

Hi guys I recently purchased a book called "a proffesors guide to growing autoflower" and whilst I'm reading there is a part that said I don't have to TOP or FIM? Is that true? The book is 2013. And all videos I saw on YouTube etc re autoflowers are all being topped and suppercropped! Can any one direct me on this please? Thanks a lot.
