Wow, AFN is changing fast. A lot of new folks, vendors, and outside exposure. It is great with the vibe and buzz growing stronger.

I just watched a great grow vid posted by a novice with it hosted on a social media site. Referencing a totally illegal area.
I don't know crap about the best security to put in place on the posters end but I do know that this secured server has no influence on what is posted upstream. People in my country have had their arrests publicized on the news which reported that authorities traced them through you-tube where they posted their vids. so I have two requests.

The first being : If you are not 100% legally safe, don't just post videos until you know that the methods and places you use are 100% secure. Untraceable back to you. If in doubt, wait until you learn how to know for sure.

The second: Like I said, I don't know Jack about the mechanics of how to safely post
. How about some of our resident techies chiming in on how to best protect our selves when posting our own video creations?

You're opening a can of potential paranoia there...

To upload to uTube you will need a Google Account (perhaps you just have one) - could be the same one you use for your email or your Android phone updates etc... in any case your IP address will be logged by Google and your ISP will know to which account the IP address was allocated and when (lease period). Rumbled.

You could set up a fake Google account - linked to another fake email address - fake as in not traceable to your own details - and only use the two combined in say an Internet Cafe or free Wi-Fi location and from a device only used in such locations away from home/grow where your location isn't as accurate. MAC addresses and IP Spoofing are beyond the of scope of this discussion atm, and (in my opinion) are for serious stuff you want to get totally anonymised, but there are many commercial VPN products that for a few bucks per month will hide a lot of your originating IP address etc.. All of which is totally pointless if the opening scene starts with 'hey dudes this is my latest grow' and then your face appears on camera.

.... But this is where you've opened the proverbial can of worms...

So where is the AFN server based? and is that location likely to be compliant to handing over user information if requested by a law enforcement agency from any 'other country' - aka if a US based server would you comply with a court order from an EU State for example - or Canada - or...?

Would you tell the user? (oops you cant because you've probably been legally gagged by a court order).

Do you retain the IP address(s) of individual members when posting? You obliviously retain time date etc... but what about IP data? A lot of forum tools do retain this information - it's very useful for admins tracking and banning troublesome people online.

So forget uTube... how comfortable were you with that last post here from a location where even open debate is stifled by everyone but the most outspoken of doctors (with regard to medicinal use). Forget open debate on recreational lol.

Or do as I do and just go FUCKIT... see you in court :D

If you are in the US and are worried about it run a VPN.

If you are in the US your posts and info are only a supeona away.

If you are in the US you know FED laws trump state laws in court so until FED laws change there are technically no "friendly" areas.

If you are in the US you probably know they could care less what you do if you are a small fish growing your own meds.

If they want you for something else and just want to pile on, or you announce you are a commercial grower then maybe you are no longer a small fish to the powers that be....

Run a VPN and don't worry about it. Or just say fuck it and don't worry about it.

A lot of good sound stuff Hashmaster. Especially re: the Feds. If we see Christie on the ticket it is time to worry.
I'm sure I said F'k it about 50 years ago.
My main concern is the hosting. Hoping someone has knowledge of the most secure servers that host vids other than you-tube ,google, and the others that have shown how easily they turn your info over. A list, not posted here, that they could pm to those members who request it. I want one and would distribute it on request.
With the law change allowing NSA and all of the other digital intelligence apparatus to routinely turn over all evidence of crime uncovered, directly to the authorities in that jurisdiction. Little crimes will matter. I've lived in enough sleepy towns with bored LEO's just looking for action of any kind to not be surprised. The type who jail kids in decriminalized states by adding papers or a pipe as another charge. Skirting the spirit of the law as well as the wording that calls for a ticket.

Perhaps AFN would offer appropriate sized blocks of storage for videos. I'd pay a reasonable fee for the same security posting video that I feel posting forum hosted pics. Even better, how about a vendor sponsoring it.

VPNs, Proxy DNS and IPs, TOR. all good tools to use and so far, nobody has announced cracking the 128 bit secured server code that AFN and most banks run. But all those are a waste of time if you host your identity, location, and potential evidence on a secured or non secure server that is subject to court order.

This is tough.
It is hard enough to cover yourself against malware, adware, ransomware, identity theft, zero days, etc. etc. etc. There are secure places to use. Kolab is a good secure email and groupware site. I use them for private and secure email. The issue I think is that in our day to day lives there are just to many opportunities to leave some kind of trail back to you. The trick then is to separate yourself from that and that is not simple and easy. So even if you try to be careful there is alway some bit of something that can be traced back to you.
The best thing in my mind is to just not do it or be aware of the consequences and do a reasonable job of covering your tracks. Chances are that would be good enough. In most places they are not out to get you for what we do. I just cannot imagine what would drive me to do something that would jeopardise myself or my family. If just growing and using is that dangerous, you should not be making videos of it! You should be devoting your energies to stealth!!

For reasonable try Kolab. If your really serious there are hosts that would accommodate you. Even if your not serious, a VPN is just good sense these days!!! I always use it, always!!!

Thanks Spliffscot, wwwillie, Hashmaster. For the solid info.
As far as spreading paranoia. I hope so, where it is needed. It leads to caution. With videos being encouraged and going up in droves from the safe areas, It is easy for a non tech savvy person to be lulled into a false sense of security.
Understanding is everything.

From the 70's and Tricky Dick "Even if you're not paranoid it doesn't mean they are not after you"! (Actually Catch-22)

There is very little you can do these days to stay anonym, especially if you are active on the big social media sites, profiling is really easy when you submit lots of content. The least you should do is to have a premium vpn service, through which you establish an online identity that cannot be traced to your real identity in any way - never use it without a vpn in other words. Post your pictures and videos through this new id, learn about exif in photos and videos and how to remove them. Keep tatoos or anything unique in your environment out of images. But ultimately, id detection depends on how big of a fish are you. Even vpns/tor have their limits to hide your identity.
