So would I be right in saying that the best cobs like Cree, osram and citizen using half the watts of a hps so if I have 300 w of quality cobs would equal 600hps?

I believe 300 watts of quality white light cobs will surpass a 600hps.
200 watts would equal it
In both cases the cobs are cheaper to run and produce less heat to be exhausted.

Another point. Don't get to caught up in advertised watts.
White light cobs are much more efficient with the light they produce for the energy consumed.

Yeah thanks for your replies, I do like the auto cobs and plan to get some in time. I recently purchased a budmaster cob x 6 with the latest osram cobs and presumed it would equal a 600w hps, it runs at 50 watts a cob, so very happy with your replies 
Als meant to add the plants are loving the new light,praying like mad! Also had a plant sulking under a mars reflector so put it under the white cobs and wow it's taken off!
Sounds great I hope you have a wonderful grow. I use 4 AutoCobs in a 3 x 4 and they are absolutely fantastic.
What I like best is that I can move each one up or down to keep my ladies happy. I have not abandoned my
LED panels as long as they work I will continue to use them too. Just in another area.......Good Luck.

I'd say at current efficiency levels, 60watts of LED for every 100 watts of HPS/MH. The flexibility of COB tech makes them much more adapable to multiple situations/garden layouts, plus you can run the hard or soft, or anywhere in between You can build a light to get started, run it hard, then add more cobs and lower the power per cob,as time and money allows to improve efficiency.
