I bought this little clip on lens for my phone that takes good pictures IF you can hold it steady enough.

I have a USB microscope but it is even harder to hold steady. In order to use it I clip a piece of bud off and put it on a solid surface; then I get great photos.
IF you have a USB scope long enough, and you can get them with 6' cables, then you can support the bud with one hand and use the other for the scope whilst the phone or tablet rests on something, and you can get them with a nice thumb button which will take the photo.
That's the route I've been looking at, you can get them with built in lights (absolutely necessary) for under $20 direct from China so you wouldn't be paying much more on the likes of Fleabay or Amazon
The problem is finding one that will take piccies "remote" from the phone as some say the remote "snap" button will only work win Winblows and not 'Droid, so when I find one that definitely states it will do the necessary I'll link to it, but for just looking at the trichs the cheaper ones should do the trick.
Edit: Seems the issue with 'Droid is "USB OTG" (USB On The Go) and "external camera" compatibility, but most modern devices shouldn't have an issue there, depending on your phone software, but you can get an app to check this and my "old" OnePlus One running the latest version of Lineage does say it is compatible. Next is to rig up an old webcal via a USB OTG adaptor and test this, will get back to you on that
Final Edit: As suspected, old Webcam didn't work but thumb drives, keyboards, etc, do so a scope as suggested above should not be an issue. You know I'm going to buy one now, don't you, just for the hell of it.
