Live Stoner Chat Need a USB/WiFi microscope recommendation!

I bought this little clip on lens for my phone that takes good pictures IF you can hold it steady enough.

I have a USB microscope but it is even harder to hold steady. In order to use it I clip a piece of bud off and put it on a solid surface; then I get great photos.

IF you have a USB scope long enough, and you can get them with 6' cables, then you can support the bud with one hand and use the other for the scope whilst the phone or tablet rests on something, and you can get them with a nice thumb button which will take the photo.

That's the route I've been looking at, you can get them with built in lights (absolutely necessary) for under $20 direct from China so you wouldn't be paying much more on the likes of Fleabay or Amazon

The problem is finding one that will take piccies "remote" from the phone as some say the remote "snap" button will only work win Winblows and not 'Droid, so when I find one that definitely states it will do the necessary I'll link to it, but for just looking at the trichs the cheaper ones should do the trick.

Edit: Seems the issue with 'Droid is "USB OTG" (USB On The Go) and "external camera" compatibility, but most modern devices shouldn't have an issue there, depending on your phone software, but you can get an app to check this and my "old" OnePlus One running the latest version of Lineage does say it is compatible. Next is to rig up an old webcal via a USB OTG adaptor and test this, will get back to you on that

Final Edit: As suspected, old Webcam didn't work but thumb drives, keyboards, etc, do so a scope as suggested above should not be an issue. You know I'm going to buy one now, don't you, just for the hell of it.

I ain't no spring chicken, and got a clip on magnifier wiith a light just so I I could see things on the bigger phone screen over the little 60x handheld scope I have. And when my eyes are too worn out for the 5.5" phone screen, it can go on the 10.1" tablet if I haven't bought some sort of digital scope which lets me put the phone/tablet down by then.

And I'm the fist to admit that I sometimes have to pop a valium to steady the hand, so it's not like I'm some young whippersnapper either in that respect, just pointing out that you don't have to pay silly money on things.

It's your choice, of course, and to many "lab grade" will be "silly money" when a $5-10 scope/macro lens does just as well for checking things. You want to take pics that can win Nat Geo Photo of the Year competitions, that's different.

Totally disagree. For me personally its not about taking snazzy pics at all. Its about basic survival for me. I use the thing to just get a clear picture of the trichs so I can tell when to harvest. I am on a mission to find a way to create a med that is high in CBN which is not psychoactive but very sedative to treat my severe insomnia instead of using big pharma drugs. Its important to start with a flower product that is very, very amber from what I understand, so its important for me that I have a way to really get a good look at the trichs.

The clip on shook way to much for me to use. Believe me i tried to use the $10 devices. That list I mentioned above were all things I bought with Amazon Prime. I returned the clip ons I tried (2 different ones). I kept the $30 USB and I sometimes use that right in the tent hooked up to my phone but it still shakes like an SOB. I returned the loupes and eyewear devices.

As I was struggling trying all these devices and not getting the results I needed a friend of mine suggested we have a look with his Nikon microscope that he uses out in the field for well site geology. Sure enough, that thing opened up a whole new world for me. A used one of these would cost $200ish so I totally agree that it is crazy expensive, even getting a used one. Then I was gifted the Zeiss from someone who owns and runs a lab. Very fortunate to get it for free. So for me, it was totally worth the cost because hell it cost me less than the clip ons!

Then the problem is not the clip on then, especially as holding a phone steady with one hand takes practice.

The one used in my pic above cost me €3.30 in a local store, and even without "anti-shoogle" turned on it is quite possible to take good enough pics, never mind just look at things, with such a cheap addon, especially with a slight reconfiguration of the phone so, for example, the power button "operates the shutter".

But you have made your choice, I'm just saying such drastic measures are not always the solution as the underlying issue is still there.

Love it.....wireless/Bluetooth/WiFi........walk to garden with iPad and scope....scope any bud I want anywhere on the plant

I ordered one a few days ago. Not sure if it's the same make, looks similar, wifi. The stand is the same as the cheap black usb scopes that I've gone thru 4 of so far. :pass:

What is the brand/model of that clip on? They sell it on Amazon? I’m pretty good at holding my phone still. I bought a USB microscope on Amazon and you’re right - it’s hard to hold still. It’s way to light. But, I’ve been using a 4’ bamboo stake as a monopod and that has helped a lot. Still, I might be interested in that clip on you used - that’s a great picture!

This is the one I got:

Amazon product ASIN B00CSJ50HY

Ah, typical XenForo software.

The forum thinks Amazon links are "media" so when you try to link to Amazon there's just a blank space.

The solution is simple, copy your Amazon link and then "insert hyperlink" (7th button from left at the top of the box you type into) to a description so your link becomes this or something like Universal 3-in-1 Lens Kit by highlighting the word(s) you want to use, then click on the button concerned and paste the link in the box that appears.

I got the cheap wifi scope yesterday. As figured, in spite of it pictured different, it is the same as the other 4 but a slightly better quality. An on off button and the LED adjustment is a wheel in the case instead of a wheel on the cord which has been a weak point. The built in wifi connected cleanly and there are two leds in the back to show charging and wifi status,

The cheaper usb taught me a few things I'll pass on. They take a nice picture and video. They need to be treated right to last. Keep away from teething dogs, mine ruined 3 by chewing. Keep the cap on when not in use. There is no easy way to clean the lens. Mating the stand to a ball jar 1/2 full of sand or bb's gives a great stable platform for time lapse or whatever. It is a bit thick to allow the cap to fit the jar snugly but you can get a bite on the first thread enough to make it work.
I'm on a droid and the snap button on the screen works fine.

I forgot to add to keep it in a box or lintless bag. My first got one fleck of dust behind the lens on the chip and I couldn't get at it without disassembly. Ruined every pic.
Those selling them may try to send a returned unit. I got one. If the focus wheel isn't smooth and loose, send it back.

Here's my pocket microscope.
