Lighting ?'s about converting mars type led to cobs

Wow! You guys are great! Thank you for all the info.

After reading a lot and seeing your take on it BigSmo, I think I may leave the 300 intact and build something from cobkits.com.

I have a 2x4x5 tent. I'm thinking about getting the HLG-185 driver with 3 CLU048-1818 3500k cobs. I would get 3 heatsinks and hang them individually.

Any thoughts would be great!
I left mine in the center of my light set in the hopes that it might provides some small contribution to the overall spectrum of light available. Can't hurt and as small as my light setup is electric is not an issue.

That's probably the best choice. The mars conversion is a very solid upgrade. The numbers don't lie and it's pretty simple but with a few extra Peso's your much better off. If heat and energy costs aren't a huge issue adding it in during flower is beneficial too. That extra red boost never hurts.

lol puddentane beat me by 10 seconds. A 2x4 tent is tough. I personally figure 16"x16" per cob. That leaves you a little short in the depth. Maybe

I am running in exactly the same configuration and it is a challenge to get any space. Dont over plant as these light upgrades and a little training are going to easily fill that tent full. You will have to do some LST with them to keep their height down or else plan on breaking your main cola over at some point because it could easily reach the lights long before harvest time. Looking forward to seeing what you grow!

Exactly. For a 2x4x5 2 plants is the max I'd go. A scrog is ideal but I wouldn't let the plants get past 3 feet from the floor or 2 feet from the light. It's hard when your plants get to tall and keep growing so keeping them as short as possible is almost mandatory. It also helps for denser bottom buds since the lights will be even across the whole plants and closer to the bottom. Scrog screen support heavy buds from flopping over which is never good either.

Welcome to AFN! Always great to see new people jump right into DIY!
And DIY COB based led lighting is very rewarding. Not always cheap, but you can built a top quality light for 1/3 of the price of a quality retail brand. Even there, there are still very few using these new gen chips!

Your choice for a starter is good way to build on a budget. Once you have the base components, you can build from there, or re-configure, whatever fits your needs!

And your plants will show youlove in the form of fat, sticky colas!

Big Smo ( hey! Do you know what a schmoo is?? :eyebrows: ) Is one of thew most helpful people on the forum! He's always willing to jump right in and help! I learn something new from him all the time. Great to have someone with his experience on the team!

Afn bring newer to DIY is tough. Introducing a whole new world to an established and successful forum takes time. I can see there is allot of activity flooding this area lately which I hope will strengthen us even more.

Thanks pop and arty. You guys are both just as experienced it's just that I beat you here lol. Pop your current success, the stories I read daily and my own consecutive 1/2lb autos under minimal wattage is enough to know there is a something very special about these cobs. Dans thread which I'm happy to read could be the start of him growing plants like yours pop22. Meanwhile saving 50% on his light bill nevermind the savings on cooling. It's time to motivate people so they can experience what we have.
