Hello !

Please try to answer any or both that you know ! thanks :)

First question is regarding PLASTIC BAG .. with reference to following img. from CropKing seeds..
@CropKing

https://www.cropkingseeds.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/CropKingSeeds_HowToGerminate2017-April.jpg

So how many agree with NO PLASTIC BAG for germination principal ?

Second Question is regarding home made activated charcoal air filter aka carbon filter ..From these videos..

Video1 : /watch?v=t0cM3yLHk8E

Video 2 : /watch?v=08LkkzPKVoc

- Do these work ?

- How effective are they .. More practically speaking, consider you have made these air filters, how many stinking plants will you try to grow per air filter of each type.

- Are those activated charcoal granules one gets for aquarium as effective to be used as air purifier charcoal also ?

thanks !

there is a mephisto germ tek on this site somewhere, and i think they use ziplocks and a constant temp. may as well be gospel

Used to geem my seeds like this...that was 20 years ago. Zip lock and a paper towel work just as well.

As to the filter, I've made them in the past, and they work...that being said, I use a real can filter.
Hard to say what it'll catch, or if bought ones are better, never used one then the other on the same strain.
I never had...er... nose complaints with the self built, or the ones I've purchased.

Budget and space available would be my main factor for a decision.

I do 12-24 hours in shot glass on warming pad in closed drawer, then move seeds to paper towel method on the warming pad. And that sits in the closed drawer. Most of my seeds crack that way just fine. Curious that they say not to in that link. Everybody has their preferred method.

How much warmth should be there ? I already live in warm climate .. standard temperature here through out the year fluctuates between 20 to 30 Celsius or 68 to 86, mostly remaining in mid ranges .. so do I need a heating pad ? or warmer area to put the germination dish ?

Thanks.

I don't use a plastic bag, but I don't use the paper towel method at all.

I used to use it, but it's just too much hassle. paper towel has 2 big advantages imo:
-you can check any time how far germination is, including a final score at the end, and it allows you to seperate failing from bad seed from seed germing but failing to come aboveground.
-you don't waste pots and soil on bad seeds.

I get both of those advantages and some more with way less hassle.
I just put the seeds in a glass of water till they open, no transfer to paper towel. as soon as they open they go into soil(with paper towel I often left them in longer, causing the taproot to grow into the paper, since I was hesitant to disturb them so I checked less often)(btw, to prevent roots growing into the paper, I would use coffee filters instead, possibly paper towel outside that if the coffeefilters are drying out too quickly. and place them vertically so the root has an easy way down in between the 2 layers of paper. but that's if I would be using the paper towel method at all)

no putting it in the dark or anything, not needed at all. I put it somewhere where I won'teasily knock it over, but can easily take a look. no lifting of a paper towel to check, tearing it, etc. no soil getting from your fingers onto the paper towel either, since you don't touch anything to look.
takes even less space as a paper towel, and it's easy to keep strains seperate, just use multiple cups and lable each.
I use a tea-strainer to drain the water when it's time to plant or possibly refresh the water if they're taking long.

I do still use the paper towel method for chiliseeds btw. but with coffee filters. I haven't really experimented with using a glass of water for chiliseeds yet, probably trying that next season, might work less since chiliseeds take a lot longer to germ, but I'll see.

If the root has grown into the paper towel, just cut around it and plant it with the piece of paper towel...it'll all be fine!

I think as with a lot of growing.... we all find what works best for us....and sometimes, things that work for others just won't work for one reason or another.
