Good afternoon, all! I'm not sure if there is a more appropriate place for noob introductions, but I did try to look. Please don't hesitate to let me know if I'm doing this wrong.

Anyway, hi! I'm stoked to be starting my journey and decided it's time to find some community. I'm a middle-aged (45) dad who found that cannabis helps my anxiety way better than benzos years ago, and now trying to get self-sufficient. I started out with advice from a friend in a fantasy league, purchased some Gelauto seeds from Mephisto, and received a Vivosun 2x4x6 kit for Christmas. I have done tons of reading, bought some books, and feel reasonably prepared. I come from the tropical plant growing hobby as well as the mushroom hobby, if that provides context.

So my two girls are planted in 5gal pots with Ocean Farm soil (couldn't find Happy Frog in my small town). They broke the soil on Christmas and are looking good. My big initial question is: Should I let these two go without attempting training since it's my first-ever grow, or should I attempt some kind of training?

Thanks so much in advance for what I hope is the beginning of a new journey in this community for me.

Kris

I'm thinking that it's lockout from too much nitrogen since I planted the seeds straight into FFOF. I've seen enough signs of excess nitrogen between this girl and the one I planted next to her that I'm convinced I need to find another soil option for my next grow. I'm in SC, don't have access to local grow shops, so I'm wide open to suggestions. So far, I'm only watering with Ph-adjusted dechlorinated tap and haven't added any nutrients.
A plant will always take up nitrogen, its one of the hardest to lock out. Im thinking its potassium or phosphorus overload. Ocean forest is a hot soil though. That might be causing a snowball effect locking out secondary nutes like magnesium which is why its getting pale. Magnesium is the center molecule of chlorophyll.

looks great! You can already tell you're going to have a nice plant structure. If she was my girl I would just focus on some leaf tucking for the next week. Try and expose the lower branches until they grow past the big leaves. Sometime I just use a bbq skewer staked in the dirt to hold them out of the way.

Can you find Happy frog or Coast of Maine soil local? If not order Build a soil online if you want to stay with soil

I bought cal-mag. Is this something I should think about adding the next time I need to water?

Probably not if you have N tox now that will only make it worse there’s more N then anything in most Calmag’s

NOOOOO there is plenty of calcium in ocean forest. Calcium and magnesium have to be in a delicate balance because they directly effect eachothers uptake by the plant. Your best bet is to feed a normal feed diluted to like 1/4 strength.

I tried to get Happy Frog, but my local nursery only had Ocean Forest, which is what I have historically used with monsteras and other tropical plants, so I decided to roll with it. For the next grow, I'll either try to find Happy Frog or build my own mix based on the advice of folks here

Oh I forgot to mention too much nitrogen shows up as very dark green leaves. Its the easiest way to tell, when it gets really bad stems lose rigidity and become floppy and soft.

Yep, the weaker sister in particular has been dark green, and leaf tips curled down.
