Hey All, I am growing for my own personal use, in my basement. I have been tossing around a few ideas in my head about the best way to exhaust my grow room. Right now I am leaning heavily towards going an underground route.
I would just have to drill a 4 inch hole through the wall and use pvc pipe to 90 it down to the ground and dig down about 16 inches and install that black plastic perforated pipe that everyone uses in their French Drains in a trench about 40 feet over to my worm bed. Again, 90 it up and out of the ground with the pvc pipe, put a good double screen barrier over the end, and kind of set./position a straw bale around it. This would introduce a small amount of residual heat under the worm box and should even keep them breeding maybe through the winter. That way I can reclaim some of that expensive energy that I'm exhausting out of a central cooled/heated room.
Whatcha' Think?

If your basement has a window, you can always put the fan/filter outside of tent. I've had mine outside my tent for several years and never had a problem. I have a two drawer file cabinet pushed up to one of the lower window openings and have my radiator heater inside that as the tent sucks in the toasty warm goodness.

Hey guys, thanks for the responses. My basement is partially/mostly underground, but no windows. Also, I have neighbors within 60 feet of me on one side and 200 feet on the other. But, I have a long, deep, property, over an acre and a half, so I have lots of room to run the pipe away from the neighbors noses. I also have a strapping young son that is goiing to operate the walk behind trencher I am going to rent to dig the trench. Otherwise, no way would it ever get done. LOL
The other thing is... This is the least obvious way of piping the odors away from my neighbors. Remember, the meter readers still come to that side of the house, telephone, cable, etc.. Too many nosy people doin' lookie lookie for me to be comfortable.

that is a hella work to do,even if you have a slave to do the brunt of it.
if the carbon filter is working and doing its job the air will have no odour anyways.
with 40 feet of ducting that will need a booster fan or two,can they be buried to ?
sounds like a big job.dosnt a worm bin/compost pile create its own heat ? and air traveling 40 feet down a tube will likely lose most of its heat before it gets to the end.
a small grille/air brick or the likes wouldnt get a second look.
good luck.

Great thinking. I'm with Archie though it may lose heat, and seems like an awful lot of work. At the end of the day it's what suits you best. You've Definitely got my mind churning though as I'm sure others are too lol I'm all about ingenuity and improvisation. If I think of anything anymore valuable to add I'll post. Until then good luck with your ideas I hope it works out. Definitely interested.

Had a mate who built a garage in his garden from scratch who did this. He lay a concrete floor over a bed of charcoal and mot with a 6" duct from the room through the floor it worked perfect and you couldn't smell a thing

I am not so sure about this.
A french drain is meant to take water away. The water keeps the pipes clear and flushed.
With using it for exhaust air, I would be worried about soil/residue penetrating through the perforations and blocking the hell out of it without water to flush it/keep it clear.
Depending on the depth and your water table level, water could also feed back this way.
Going with an UN-perforated pipe, feeding into a gravel/stone bed below the worm bed may be a better option (90 it down at the end)

Good point. And you are right, in most situations that is exactly what would happen. But, where I am located, on the side of a hill, good slope, I'm running the line up the hill, buried in a trench, covered in gravel. The gravel will keep dirt out. As far as water getting in, no problem. Just put a drain at the low end of the run, at the entrance to the house. All water will drain downhill, into the drain. The perforations are needed, in my thoughts, to help 'scrub" the odors. The air coming out should smell of earth, not cannabis. JMHO

That's just the thing, Dude. It's NOT a hard job to dig a trench with a motorized Ditch Witch. I've done it too many times to count. The other thing is... I don't want to have the cost and hassle of constantly replacing carbon filters, and worrying if they are doing their job. Ya know? I do this, and everything is done. No worries. And, you can always use it as a chase if I ever want to run power out to that area. Many, many reasons for ME, in particular, to do it this way. And, I have a strong aversion to prison bathroom scenes. LOL
