A short diatribe about soil pH testers, and how much do you trust one?

I've been using a cheap Chinese jobby for my outdoor grows and it's done me fine up to now. But during my recent shopping-extravaganza buying new kit, I decided to upgrade to a decent, more-expensive one. And a more accurate one too, hopefully.

First use, I shoved the probe into my potted babies in the veg chamber .. reading came back pH 3.5 ...! Huh?
Surely not, they'd be dead by now if that was true, and they look very much alive and kicking to me.
So I then shoved it into a freshly-opened bag of Plagron soil ... pH 3.5
A glass of tap-water ... pH 3.5
Some sand ... pH 3.5
A cow's arse ... pH 3.5 ... (which is ludicrous because as everyone knows, a cow's arse is pH 6.2!)

I don't think it was a crap brand, just a bad unit. The company didn't quibble, instant refund.
But my point is, it could have cost me dear if I'd trusted the first reading ...

fascinating info budwiser ! thanx for that ! so i now why cow dung is used so much in horticulture , I guess when its spread over the fields it keeps the crops at neutral ph level

Take a well lit photo with the flash off. Basically anytime when 50% of the hairs are orange, but I would wait until 75% are orange. Really up to you though. Get a microscope they're cheap and you won't have to guess anymore.

Looks pretty damn close to me, if not done.

Ive got a loupe just cloudy at mo no amber

You don't need any Amber trichomes I don't think. When I harvest I normally only see a few. If it looks like glass then they are not done.

When trichomes turn Amber that's actually a bad thing I think. I think I read that the Amber trichomes are the point at which THC begins breaking down and turning into CBD. Cloudy/milky is good.

I suppose you're posting because you think it's done, but want to make sure before doing anything... you can kind of look and tell when it's done, if you have to try and convince yourself it's done then it's not :p you'll know when it's time when you don't second guess yourself

Are you having to water a lot less now?

Hey,

When you cut depends on taste basically.
Mine dictactes me to wait for the amber for the indica dominant plant. However, for sativa dominant strains, I prefer milky. Some people don't care about the trichomes though. They know their strains and chop them at a specific time based solely on taste. I guess that would be based on terpenes and flavonoid content but that my friend is kinda hard to determine unless you have access to a lab.
