How deep is the river on the average close to your place?
depends on high low water, always changing. Even at low water when your best river running skills get you over the riffles, there are long stretches of bottomless whirlpooling darkness, danger. High water is real fun, and more dangerous. At the mouth of "Home slough", low water, a 16' boat pole can't find bottom. A wild rvr from a wild land
 
OH cool! Did you get into large steelhead rainbows in there(like the 30" + fish/12+lbs)
yep, steelies were a real treat, though we usually fished fairly high up in smaller streams...My buddies dad had the worlds record when we were in grade school.
