Grow overview:

This grow will be 2 West Coast OG Auto by Fastbuds. One will be mine & one will belong to Mrs H'Ghar.

The light I am using is a custom built strip light in 3500k which dims from 160 watts to 330 although I am unlikely to raise the power above 240 watts at any point in the grow given that the tent is 2x4.

The medium I'm using is Canna Coco Professional Plus+ using Biotabs organic nutrients and an additional healthy root additive. We are using Autopot’s Smart pot XL system attached to a 47L reservoir. The reservoir will be filled with only plain tap water.

I have previously grown in DWC but this will be the first coco grow I have done. I am after organically grown buds with respectable yields and hope that the simpler feeding regime will allow me more time to train the plants into some kind of Scrog.

My Journal Style:

The primary purpose of this journal is to get me in the habit of recording my grows; to enable me to become a better grower over time. Every action I take has research behind it that makes sense to me, some of this may be right and much more may be wrong but I enjoy the journey so please don’t be offended if you give me advice and I don’t take it. I will try to explain my rationale for my actions each step of the way so if something goes wrong or right we can all know why I did it, when I’m feeling lazy I may not write the explanations in the updates but just ask if you don’t understand why I’m doing something.

I want to keep regular updates but I am not used to journaling so please allow me some time to get my habits more regular

If you're into Fastbuds, Biotabs, Autopots, Fabric Pots or LED Strip Lights then tag along for the ride and see if we can get to harvest :D

Make sure your reservoir water is aerated and PHed.

Day -2:

Had an issue with my Autopot order, which caused some delays but today received the replacement parts I needed so time to get started!

The first job was to start getting the seeds soaking for 24 hours to hydrate the seed and loosen up the shell. I first rubbed the outer coating off the seeds with my fingers, the seed itself is not actually stripey it just has a coating that makes it look that way, this step is not needed and possibly not advisable but just something I did out of fascination for the seeds.
I used bottled water since I had it on hand although if I didn’t I would have had no problem using water straight from my tap.

Next job was to prepare the pots. To prepare the coco, I used a ‘4 litre’ bowl to measure out 16ltr of coco (in reality this ends up being about 12-14ltrs as I did not compact the coco in the bowl. To this I mixed in:
75g Startrex
75g Silicium Flash
3g Mycotrex
(The amounts used here are per pot)

I mixed the medium by hand until I felt the amendments were nice and distributed throughout. I put about 2cm of clay balls in the bottom of the pots, then filled with the amended coco, leaving a deep well in the middle which was then filled with plain un-amended coco (made the hole with a plastic bottle), the point in doing this is to give the taproot a straight run to the bottom of the pot without hitting nutrients too early, my view is that it is better to underfeed and have to add more than to overfeed and risk stunted growth.

I lightly lifted & dropped the pot a few times to make the coco settle down,

on top of this, I placed 2 biotabs in the pot, 1 on each side.

I then topped off with about 5cm of plain coco over the whole pot and made a hole in the top where the EZ cube root starter would go and I sprinkled 2g of Mycotrex directly in this hole.

Day -1:

After roughly 24 hours soaking in a glass on a shelf (room about 27c), it was time to put the beans in the groundddddd.

The first step was to put the seeds in the EZ cubes, they were pushed in about half way in, then the whole cube was placed in the square hole in the coco; on top of the Mycotrex.

I then watered the pots with 500ml of bottled water mixed with 1g/l Bactrex & 2ml/l Orgatrex, the water was poured on and around the EZ cube. In hindsight, I should have soaked the pots with water the night before planting but I was terrified of overwatering and figured it better to start slow and have to add more especially since I am using 100% coco.

I placed a 100w T5HO over the pots about 6 or 7 inches from the top of the coco. Temps were between 28 and 35 throughout the day and night; we turned the light off when going to bed and on waking up. At this point, I was still waiting for a new extractor fan & parts for my light to arrive so had to make do with the situation I had.

(Forgot to take pictures, sorry)

Day 0:

By the time I went to bed, WCOG [HASHTAG]#1[/HASHTAG] had her head above ground with the shell stuck on so call this day 0.

Day 1:

Woke up to both girls above ground & straightening out. [HASHTAG]#1[/HASHTAG] (my plant) has a slight bend to each of the leaves on the first node, looks healthy otherwise so wasn’t worried about it, you’ll see it in later pics. [HASHTAG]#2[/HASHTAG] (Mrs H’Ghar plant) is perfectly straight and normal looking.

Day 3:

Top watered with 3ml/l of Healthy Root by Guard’n’Aid in 1L of tap water filtered through a charcoal filter.

Day 5:

Got the LED light added in this afternoon BUT lots of problems when setting up so spent a majority of the day with no direct lighting. Once I had the problems figured out the babies were placed under 160 watts, approximately 30cm below the light. Left is [HASHTAG]#1[/HASHTAG] (Mine), right is [HASHTAG]#2[/HASHTAG] (Mrs).

The light is only raising temps by a few degrees right now which is great given that this room is already sitting at 29c ALL DAY!
Temps are so high at the moment and our extractor fan is perhaps too strong so we are having humidity issues sitting at about 25%! Seedlings seem to be handling it well so not panicking; sometimes when I peek in the tent I will spray inside a humidity dome with plain water and place over the plants to raise humidity.

We will be running the lights 24hrs a day however up to this point the light schedule has been rather random as we were having issues when setting up but all sorted now. Tempted to drop to 20/4 (which is what I did on my previous grow) to control temps but stuck to my guns and went with 24hrs anyway as that was always my plan.

Day 6:

Okay so on day 6 if I remember correctly we fed both with 500ml of filtered water. At this point [HASHTAG]#2[/HASHTAG] was definitely looking stronger and was amazingly straight. [HASHTAG]#1had[/HASHTAG] this weird bend to the leaves but otherwise seemed happy enough.

We were battling with high temps here & extremely low humidity but the babies were seemingly unaffected.

Here are pics of them from the night of day 6.

Day 13:

Since day 6 we’ve changed the light design to be evenly spaced out. Had an absolute nightmareeee with the lights since it was a test unit done by a friend so had temporary fixings which kept coming loose and the light bars falling and almost decapitating the babies! Anyway he came and fixed them and now all is working as it should feeling a lot better with the secure lights :D

Girls getting bigger, only have this picture of [HASHTAG]#1[/HASHTAG] you can see the growth is all good and good colour but there was some slight tacoing from the heat.
