Grow Mediums Are the discs really worth it?

I'm in no hurry but my xl 2 pot came in today and it is missing the discs. I emailed AP to see if I could get them here but it got me thinking.

The darn things are only 3 bucks a peice, how special can that copper coating be and why can't I just use standard breathable root cloth from lowes?

I plan on waiting for the real discs to come but I can't help but wonder.

I use Dewitt Weed Barrier instead of the actual ones and they work fine. For about $20 you can have 200 sq ft of it.
