The only reason they made weed illegal in the 1920s was to crush the industrial hemp industry so DuPont, ICI, etc. could make money out of Nylon, Rayon, polyester, etc. and the oil companies provide the raw materials. They used the fact that black people and jazz musicians smoked marijuana to whip up a racist moral panic - Reefer Madness they called it. Opium, cannabis, even heroin were all legal before that.
